Horticultural industry

Over 1,500 hectares in the Carnarvon Horticulture District are intensively cultivated on fertile soil, producing bananas, table grapes, tomatoes, capsicums, melons, mangoes and more.

With a horticulture value exceeding $110 million, growers benefit from sub-tropical climate, minimal pests, and secure water from aquifers and river recharge.

The region generates about $6-7 million of crop output per gigalitre of water, well above the national average.

The major vegetable growing season occurs in the southern hemisphere autumn, winter and spring months. This allows the Carnarvon Horticulture District to supply the Perth and interstate market with counter-season produce.

Pastoral industry

The pastoral industry spans across approximately 75% of the Gascoyne region’s land, including 76 large stations, each averaging around 125,600 ha. where cattle are the main livestock, replacing sheep in recent decades.

These operations draw on artesian bores, dams and natural water sources to feed livestock for live export and domestic markets.

The Gascoyne enjoys key advantages which include access to major livestock export ports including Fremantle and Port Hedland, fewer pest and disease pressures, and proximity to southwest agriculture area for “finishing” livestock on smaller properties.

Together, these industries reflect a diversified agricultural economy, with strong natural advantages, innovation and market adaptability and are central to the Gascoyne’s regional identity and growth.

Did you know?

The introduction of sheep to the Gascoyne in 1876 would drive the pastrolism development of the region well into the twentieth century. Raising sheep was so successful that the Gascoyne became one of the State’s largest wool producing regions.

Annual rainfall is low (averaging around 200mm) and rainfall events are sporadic and can occur both in the summer and winter months.
