Building capacity

Recognising their importance to regional tourism and economic diversification, the Gascoyne Development Commission (GDC) has taken a proactive role in strengthening the sector through targeted investment, planning support, and on‑the‑ground engagement with pastoral operators.

Through the Regional Economic Development (RED) Grants program, GDC has invested more than $800,000 in key station tourism developments across the region, supporting projects that expand visitor capacity, improve facilities, and enhance the quality of tourism offerings. In summary:

  • Wirruwana Hub on Dirk Hartog Island ($145,434),
  • Mount Augustus Tourist Hub ($100,000)
  • Expansion of glamping and food services Bullara Station ($203,000) to new wellness and cultural tourism experiences at Wooramel River Retreat ($181,000)
  • Transformation of Warroora Station’s shearing shed ($181,000)

In addition to capital investment, GDC has funded bushfire risk assessments at stations such as Tamala and Landor, ensuring operators meet safety requirements and can continue developing tourism experiences with confidence.

GDC’s ongoing support helps pastoral stations diversify income, extend the tourism season, and attract new markets, strengthening the Gascoyne’s visitor economy while preserving the character and heritage of station life. By working closely with operators and enabling high‑impact projects, GDC is ensuring station stays remain a vibrant and resilient part of the region’s economic future.
